Bulgarian Big Brother Maps generating new revenue

Bulgaria’s National Revenue Agency is using aerial mapping to recover lost taxes.

They have been flying over luxury properties around the Eastern European Nation to curb tax evasion and land undervaluation, according to local news sources.

They began near the capital Sofia, and have now expanded the operation to other parts of the country. Government officials believe that many homes in the affluent suburbs have not been declared built, have not paid appropriate waste disposal charges, and in many cases the declared incomes of the occupiers does not match the high value of the properties. They expect to recover millions of dollars in unpaid taxes and interest on homes whose declared sizes do not match with the rates of tax they are paying.

Many of the properties have been built on the premise, and with the appropriate tax allowances, of office space, despite including pools, tennis courts and golf courses as part and parcel of their commercial space, and the fact that they are used as permanent residencies.

The results of the overhead surveys will be mapped and passed to assessors to calculate what correct levels should be, and to prosecutors where fraud has been committed.

This is a controversial use of aerial photography and mapping for properties which have been hidden behind high walls and heavy gates – for decades in some cases.

This could open up a huge market for turfed roofing around the world.
