Google launches Latitude locator app.

Now available in the iTunes app store (after one fleeting appearance previously), Google’s Latitude App allows smartphone users to advertise to the world exactly where they are.

The app gives social media a physical sense of place, in that friends and family can identify their positions and meet up when close to each other. Critics say the app could actually put its users in danger, although there are several options to reduce this risk such as identifying only the city you are in, rather than the street address, disabling live updating, or simply hiding the user.  The system could be useful in situations where two users (owners of iPhone 3Gs and above, ipod touch 3rd and 4th generation and iPad) are trying to meet up or in case of emergency when a relative or loved one goes missing.
